Barenaked Ladies – Say What You Want

We’re one week into the 31 Days of Blogging, and anyone who has followed along in recent years knows what that means: It’s time to analyze another Barenaked Ladies video!

Last year’s video featured Chris Hardwick and statutory rape. This year’s video is about…pinball. Here is one of their more recent songs: Say What You Want.

0:00 – We start off with a woman walking through a video arcade. Based on the games and pinball machines found there, this takes place some time in the late ’90s. I mean, look at these games: Mortal Kombat 4, Area 51, Jurassic Park, Twister! Teenage me would have been pumped.

BNL1

I suppose in that setting, a Barenaked Ladies pinball machine fits in quite well.

0:10 – This woman seems really enthralled by the BNL machine. I’m not sure why. I mean, there’s a Jurassic Park machine! Why wouldn’t you play the Jurassic Park machine? It’s just too bad there’s no Simpsons pinball machine. I remember really liking that one.

0:20 – Ah, I see that the BNL are actually playing inside the machine. If you recall, Shoe Box also involved a miniature version of the band. Does the band really enjoy pretending to be really small?

I wonder if that’s why she’s so intrigued. Is she curious about the logistics of a miniature band living inside of a pinball machine?

BNL3

0:27 – In the history of pinball, has anyone ever made this expression while playing?

BNL4

0:33 – She’s really into it.

0:36 – Wow, way to be enthusiastic about playing the keyboard, buddy.

0:53 – The drummer seems confused.

BNL5

1:02 – Confused or not, he’s got a job to do, so the glasses go back on.

1:18 – If I could describe this expression in one word, it would be “anguish.”

BNL6

1:19 – The machine just called her a loser. Harsh.

1:42 – Nobody has ever gotten this upset about pinball.

BNL7

1:44 – Now’s your chance, lady! Play Jurassic Park!

1:49 – She’s not going to give up that easily. The BNL machine is going down!

2:13 – MORE ANGUISH!

2:21 – Sure, lady. It’s all the machine’s fault. A poor carpenter blames his tools.

BNL8

2:28 – Final ball? Ooh, pressure is on.

2:38 – Jackpot? That didn’t take long.

2:41 – Conversely, nobody has ever been this happy about a pinball game.

BNL9

2:54 – I wish I loved anything as much as this woman seems to love pinball.

3:10 – Replay? Time to jump up and celebrate!

BNL10

3:17 – What’s going on here? Did they keyboard player just forget where the keyboard was?

3:27 – If this game really was from the 90’s, shouldn’t former singer Steven Page be on it? Just saying.

BNLPinball

And so ends another BNL video.

That certainly wasn’t the best video I’ve ever watched. When it comes down to it, watching a woman get really excited about playing pinball isn’t the most thrilling way to spend three and a half minutes. Hopefully, the band can come up with something better before next year. Or else I’ll have to examine their back catalog a little closer.

  1. Oddly enough, I saw an interview with Ed and those games are all in his basement. He’s obsessed with pinball machines!

  2. That just doesn’t sound like a BNL song, and doesn’t sound good at all. They should have just called it quits once Page left…

This is a little after my pinball heyday… which unlike music, was the early 90’s. The last years arcade games still only cost a quarter to play. Best pinball game ever was the one they made based on The Addams Family movie…
